Where do I put the hardware?

Positioning Drapery Hardware

Where you place your curtain rods or tracks is the most important decision when designing custom window treatments.  Drapes are sized  based on the rod width and height so that the panels look full and beautiful when they are drawn closed.   We start, of course with the window width and height, but ultimately it will be the hardware that determines the finished dimensions of your custom drapes.

The Regal Drapes design tool offers options to help you find the optimal panel sizes once you select the drapery style and fabric.  Wherever you start, the results will be based on your hardware placement.  If you enter window dimensions, the design tool will make some aesthetically appropriate assumptions and will add eight inches to the window width per side, and place the top of the rod six inches above the window.  This allows for some of the stack back to rest off of the glass to maintain and frame your view, and give the appearance of a longer window by drawing your eye upward.

 Common Drapery Hardware Placement

Of course not every window is the same and the adjacent wall space may not fit these defaults.  In that case, the design tool allows you to enter your own rod width and height.  From there, it will optimize the panel size of any drapery style you select.  Some of the guidelines our designers recommend include a rod height that is one-half to two thirds between the top of your window trim to the ceiling or the bottom of your crown molding.  You can also start two to three inches below the ceiling or crown molding.  Use your eye to choose the most elegant placement or consult with one of our experienced designers for professional results.

Rod Placement Below Crown Molding

Once you have determined the best place to mount your hardware, the next decision is the type of hardware to choose.  The Regal Drapes Hardware Catalog includes stunning options to complete your window designs. If you have limited wall space around your windows, selecting smaller finials or end caps will allow you to maximize the rod width and provide more space for the stack back.  If you have ample wall space, you may opt for larger, more prominent finials.
